DOT to hold public meeting March 11 on Route 202/35 intersection

YORKTOWN — The state Department of Transportation will host a public workshop to address traffic issues at routes 202/35 and Pine Grove Court and Stony Street, an intersection slated for improvement.

The informational meeting will be held from 7:30-9 p.m. Thursday, March 11 at the Yorktown Community Cultural Center Nutrition Center, 1974 Commerce St.

The triangular intersection off the Bear Mountain State Parkway is scheduled for improvement in the summer of 2011, and the DOT is holding the session in advance in search of public input, Town Supervisor Susan Siegel said.

“They’re starting the process early on because they want to get feedback from the public; specifically those involved in terms of driving in that area,” Siegel said.

The DOT has worked with the town to identify residents on the streets most affected by the future road work. The agency mailed out 850 postcards to town residents and placed 150 door tags on homes in Cortlandt also affected by traffic in the area.

Congestion at the intersection and the dangers of making a left or right hand turn onto Route 202 from Pine Grove Court are some of the concerns expressed by residents who live there, said town Planning Director John Tegeder.

“The general feeling in Yorktown is that Stony Street could possibly be aligned with Pine Grove Court and the Bear Mountain Parkway,” Tegeder said. “With a signal there, it would help both roads, the Bear Mountain Parkway and Pine Grove Court where they intersect Route 202.”

It is the first of three public meetings the DOT will conduct to receive public feedback. More will be scheduled as the project progress and as the DOT gains more input from the community, various alternatives may be proposed, Siegel said.
