PEEKSKILL

City working to curb train station parking issues

PEEKSKILL — The city is looking to crack down on double parking near the train station after complaints from Chapel Hill residents reported their parking spots are being blocked off.
City Councilman Joe Schuder said he had received complaints from residents that commuters are using parking spots paid for by Chapel Hill residents while they wait to drop off commuters during the morning hours near the train station.

“As people come to drop people off, they’re filling up spaces that people pay for,” Schuder said. “Not only that, but there’s a lot of double parking.”
Schuder said that the problem is bigger in the winter months as commuters want to get closer to the station to avoid long walks in the cold.

Police Chief Eugene Tumulo said City police have been dealing with the same issue, in one form or another, for 40 years, but the issue has become more prevalent in recent years after permit parking spots were created in the area,.

“On the west side of the tracks, people who have traditionally pulled up and double parked are
now parking in spaces for which people have permits,” Tumolo said.
The issue is creating a lot of hostility between residents and commuters, he said.

“It’s becoming very uncivil, the interactions that are going on, and I don’t blame these people, they pay for these spots and they shouldn’t have to put up with this nonsense” Tumolo said.
The best solution is to ban double parking on both sides of the street from the northern entrance of the parking area of the train station to the station, he said. The police department will issue new signs be put up to ban double parking in that area, he said.

Sewage leak
The city is reviewing procedures used to repair a sewage break on Highland Ave. on Feb. 26, which caused sewage to leak onto the street and a home on Orchard Street. The sewage was cleaned up and the city is working with the health department to inspect the area in order to make sure there is no health threat.
