Ball strikes back, threatens to sue Governor Spitzer over drivers license policy
By Sam Barron
Assemblyman Greg Ball (R-Carmel) and members of the Assembly Republican Conference are threatening to sue Governor Eliot Spitzer and State DMV Commissioner David Swarts if they do not repeal a policy that would give all New Yorkers the right to obtain a drivers license, regardless of immigrant status.

Ball said that he is giving the governor and the commissioner until October 31 to repeal the policy.

On September 21, Spitzer and Swarts announced a plan to allow all New Yorkers to be able to obtain a drivers license and received a mixed reaction. Critics fear that this could make it easier for terrorists to enter and attack New York. Proponents say that this will actually make New York safer by ensuring all drivers are licensed and insured. Spitzer also said it will bolster homeland security by record increasing the number of people documented by the government and could help law enforcement officials locate people who could be security threats.

Assemblyman Ball has spoken out against this plan since it was announced, claiming that it violates state law requiring a Social Security number be needed to obtain a license. In the next few months, people who apply for a license will not have to provide documentation displaying their social security number. People can now a show a foreign passport along with other forms of identification to obtain a license.

“The Governor’s new policy not only breaks the law, but endangers the security of nearly 18 million New Yorkers. I am asking him to stop this plan immediately,” said Ball.
